I find myslef making a to do list every day, but it always seems that five thousand things crop up in the middle of that list that need my attention immediately. How do you ever get anything done when you can;t even get through a simple to do list? I have the best intentions, but never seem to accomplish what I want in a given day. Any suggestions?

Here are a few tips to get you started at work. If your question was about home rather than work, my best suggestion is to sell your kids and husband into slavery at a local volunteer organization. Otherwise:* Turn on your voice mail * Organize a list of priority and don't allow any interruptions before the "must complete" priorities are done * Group related tasks: answering emails. answering voice mails. * Delegate authority so that others can take responsibility for things that demand your "immediate" attention. * Organize and prioritize interruptions. Make it clear you want 2 or 3 items brought to your attention at one time, not a single item 2 or 3 times a day. * Go to work an hour early several days a week to get a head start on items needing concentration * Keep in mind that when others are interrupting you they may not be focusing on their work

Interuptions are unavoidable during a work day and to believe that you can just ignore people, phone calls, and emails is just not possible. By just keeping a to do list you are ahead of the game. Think of what it would be like without the list!

You don't have to check email every 15 seconds and have a popup window and chime alert you to a new message.Just think of the different between that and doing your email at 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.

Get the tasks done first that are the most important. I, just like you don't always get to everything. Go figure. It happens to everyone. Do what works best for you. I make a list every morning as well and try to devote a time allotment as well. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Don't get stressed or be hard on yourself if you don't finish everything.
