Passwords How to make your office run smoother

Cinnamon from The Kitchen -

What is the best way to keep your passwords. I don't know all of mine off the top of my head. Right now I just have them all in a word document. I have about 25 I need to use on a daily basis. What is a better way to store my passwords?

Comment #1 Ralph from New York City -

Best way is in your head. Those places that make you change them every 30 days are very bad for security... rather than keeping them in your head... you have to write them down!

Comment #2 Janet from Computer World -

I use Roboform. I have a backup of all of my passwords on a disk as well. I've used other programs where it keeps track of your passwords and Roboform is the best one that I have used.

Comment #3 melena from new orleans -

Programs like Roboform makes me nervous because if someone manages to crack into Roboform they then have alllll your passwords! How scary is that?! I tend to use three passwords for all my accounts, i know that isn't so great either heh. But every once a while i change the three passwoerd to a new set of three passwords, it's easier than trying to juggle 30 passwords.

Comment #4 Spongebob from The Ocean -

Yeah I tend to use the same password for many of my log ins and it scares me too. I use roboform on a couple things but nothing very important like financial sites. The best thing is by memory, but other than that possibly on a disc, not on the computer hard drive, that you keep hidden away where no one knows where it is.

Comment #5 Allison from California -

I use Roboform as well and have never had any problems. I don't use the same password over and over again and that's what I like about Roboform - it remembers for me.

Comment #6 sundance from smallville -

I know all of mine by heart and hope that I never have a brain lapse. LOL I don't have them written down anywhere but I think I will at some point just to be on the safe side.

Comment #7 rjbond from in the middle of nowhere -

I keep a copy locked away in the safe in the event I have to be away for a while and need someone to take of business. Of course when I return I change the passwords again.

Comment #8 Sweetness from Earth, the Universe -

One of the best ways in a situation where you have to change the passwords every so many days is to add numbers on the end of the same password.

For instance if you use a password that is your first and middle name it is usually safe because most people won't know your middle name. Either capitalize the first letter of each name of use a lower case for the first letter and caps for the rest of the letters and then when you have to change the password for security add a 1 on the end or an x on the end and for three months just add another 1 or an x.

So if you put DorothyJane then after three months you can change it to dOROTHYjANE and then after another three months do DorothyJane1 or x and then DorothyJane11 or xx and so on.

This way you never will forget it and the numbers following are easily tracked on your desk calendar. At the beginning of each quater put a 1 or 11 or 111.

Another way is to use your mother's first name and her maiden name. No one else in your company would ever be able to crack that one.

Hence there is no need to write it down or to put it on disk and hide it away.
